Great Santa Cruz Winery!!!!

Posted by on May 23, 2011 in culinary surfing, Surfing in Southern California | 0 comments

For all you wine loving surfers out there I have a winery from Santa Cruz that I KNOW you are going to fall in love with! The winery, MJA Vineyards, is owned by Marin Artukovich. Marin has been surfing his whole life, he also has been playing professional beach volleyball most of his adult life. Marin grew up around the Orange County beaches. Was a contractor in San Diego, retired from that and moved to Hawaii to start and build a very successful Coffee business. After many years growing and selling coffee he decided to move back to California and grow wine. Yes I said grow wine because that is what wine grape growers really do with the help of the wine maker. Below I have posted the web site, Please stop by and try out his fantastic wines, you will not be disappointed, I guarantee! Tell him you heard about him from Anthony at Surfingsocal.com! The website is:http://mjavineyards.com/. You will have to copy and paste until I learn how to make this a clickable link or go to MY FAVORITES on the right side of the website and just click on the link there. Also He still sell’s his great coffee so check that out also.

Posted by on Apr 30, 2011 in Surfing in Southern California | 0 comments

I’m looking for any of you surfers out there that don’t live on a beach or just blocks from a beach that would love to tell there story on my site. I have met many surfers from the desert and mountain’s and other places that, for whatever reason live there but still surf. If you would like to tell your story of what you go through and how far you travel to catch some waves because you just flat love to surf, then email me and I will try to post it here so you can share with others in your same situation, and the ones that do live at the beach can appreciate your love for surfing. You can use the contact page or email me at anthony.surfingsocal@gmail.com. I hope to hear from some of you! Also if you have any photos from a recent trip and would like to share send them along.

Sting Ray Stings

Posted by on Apr 27, 2011 in Surfing in Southern California | 0 comments

Well I guess it’s getting to that time of year again when I hear of people getting stung by ray’s. They say the best way to not get stung is to do the “sting ray shuffle”. That is shuffle your feet on the sand so as to not step on the ray.I know getting stung hurt’s like hell and below I have added some hint’s that should help. by the way if you can( of Age) soak your foot in very hot water while drinking Jack Daniels on the rocks, boy you would be surprised at how fast the pain goes away( just kidding) , I know it’s no laughing matter.

Soak the affected limb in the hottest water tolerable for at least an hour. Other sources of heat such as a high power spotlight, engine manifold covered with a damp towel or hot car hood covered with a damp towel can also be used with caution. An instant hot pack like the kind used in glove warmers may be a good thing to keep on hand in your first aid kit when venturing into stingray territory. An open flame of any kind is probably to dangerous too use due to risk of burning the skin but may be considered if great care is taken to avoid burning and nothing else is available. Because stingray venoms are composed of heat-labile proteins, doing this will alter the tertiary structure of the polypeptide protein molecule by denaturing and thereby deactivating the poison. Ultimately this means that the venom will have less effect. Not only does the hot water help with the venom, but at the same time it will significantly reduce the amount of pain the victim is experiencing. Beach lifeguards sometimes keep buckets of hot water around the station on busy summer days – you could ask to use it. The venom will often become gel or jelly-like and ooze from the open wound–this is desired.

It probably wouldn’t hurt to go see a doctor to make sure the barb is out and especially if you have a large cut that might need stitches.

Be safe and have fun!
